Stirling North lies 8 km east of Port Augusta at the base of the Southern Flinders Ranges. The town grew from a modest railway settlement, about 100 homes were built for rail employees in the 1980s, to a thriving satellite community of 2,793 residents according to the 2021 census. Its railway station remains a key junction for up to four lines, and the northbound Augusta Highway meets the eastbound Flinders Ranges Way just outside town, while a weekday bus links Stirling North with Port Augusta city centre.
