Stirling North, known locally as Catninga, lies 8 km east of Port Augusta at the foot of the Southern Flinders Ranges. At the 2021 census the suburb recorded 2,793 residents, a rise from 350 in 2008. The town began as a railway‑employee settlement in the 1980s with about 100 houses, and subsequent residential growth has turned it into a primary satellite community for Port Augusta.
The town provides basic services such as hotel accommodation, food shops, a general store, fuel outlets, a post office and public telephones. Residents can enjoy a golf course, tennis court, bike track, public park and the heritage‑listed Davenport Reservoir and Storage Tank. Situated at the junction of the northbound Augusta Highway and eastbound Flinders Ranges Way, Stirling North is served by a weekday bus to Port Augusta and retains a railway station that connects up to four main lines.
