Overview

Willowie is a modest township nestled in South Australia’s upper Mid North, positioned on the Wilmington–Ucolta Road halfway between Wilmington and Orroroo. Established in 1878 on a pastoral run dating back to 1844, its name reflects the Aboriginal words “willa” (green trees) and “owie” (water). The town’s historic streets once hosted a Bible Christian (later Methodist and Uniting) church, a Lutheran church, a hotel, a general store, a butcher, a saddler and a school, signalling a once‑busy community hub.

Today the centerpiece of local life is the memorial hall opened in 1953, which incorporates two stained‑glass windows relocated from the former Methodist church in 2006 to honour World War One servicemen. While the settlement has declined, its road link provides easy access to nearby centres, and the hall continues to serve as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
