Wool Bay, SA 5575

Overview

Wool Bay sits on the east coast of the Yorke Peninsula, midway between Stansbury and Coobowie and about 220 km by road from Adelaide (just over 60 km across Gulf St Vincent). The small coastal town enjoys a relaxed seaside lifestyle centred on its protected beach, where a permanently moored pontoon, sun shelters and a concrete boat ramp invite swimming, kayaking and family picnics. Dolphin and sting‑ray sightings are common, and fur seals gather on the rocky outcrop near the second and third coves at dusk.

The Wool Bay jetty, built in 1882 and extended for the lime‑burning trade, now serves anglers and scuba divers, offering catches of squid, garfish and occasional leafy seadragon beneath its waters. A remaining heritage lime kiln adds history. Road access links the community to nearby towns and Yorke Peninsula, while local governance falls under Yorke Peninsula Council, the state district of Narungga and the federal Division of Grey.

Region type mix: Metro 58%, Remote 42%.
