Overview

Franklin is a historic riverside town set on the western bank of the Huon River, about 45 km south‑west of Hobart. The 2021 Census recorded 444 residents, with a median age of 64, giving the township a relaxed, retirement‑focused atmosphere. Its compact layout centres on a reclaimed foreshore that hosts rowing regattas, cricket, riverside walks and informal camping, while the Wooden Boat Centre, local cideries and roadside fruit stalls keep the boat‑building and orchard heritage alive. Housing ranges from heritage cottages lining the river to newer homes being added on the landward side of the Huon Highway.
