Overview

Lapoinya is a small agricultural hub on Tasmania’s north‑west coast, situated just west of Wynyard. Its name comes from a Tasmanian Aboriginal term for “fern tree,” echoing the remnants of the original temper‑ate rainforest that still fringe the area. The community grew commercially around 1900 and today centres on forestry, mixed cropping, particularly potato‑growing, and dairy‑cattle grazing, giving residents a countryside lifestyle closely tied to the land.

Although the local post office, which opened in 1912, closed in 1970, the town remains active in regional issues, notably the 2014 campaign against Forestry Tasmania’s logging and the 2016 anti‑logging protest that saw Bob Brown and others arrested.
