Overview

Lefroy is a quiet rural locality in the George Town council area, part of the Launceston region of Tasmania. Situated about 46 km north of Launceston, the 2016 census recorded just 76 residents, giving the community a close‑knit, country feel. The western edge of the suburb follows the Curries River, and the area’s roots trace back to its original name, Nine Mile Springs, before being renamed for Sir John Henry Lefroy in 1880.

Despite its rural character, Lefroy is well linked by road. The B82 Bridport Road runs along the southern boundary, while the C807 (Big Hill/Shaw/Hope/Beechford Road) branches north through the village and connects with C808 Lefroy Road, which heads north‑west to the centre of town. These routes provide easy access to surrounding communities and the wider Launceston region, supporting a mix of countryside homes and family properties.
