The 2021 Census recorded 4,769 residents living in a mix of former dairy farms, apple orchards and newer subdivisions along the West Tamar Highway, with many homes near the Tamar River where fresh water meets the estuary. The community hub hosts the Legana Cricket Club, Tennis Club, a children’s playground and a planned bicycle dirt‑jump park; the historic Freshwater homestead now operates as a bed‑and‑breakfast. A local vineyard at Velo Wines adds to the semi‑rural lifestyle.
Legana’s shopping centre, anchored by Woolworths, includes KFC, bakery, chemist, post office and other retailers. A new primary school and community sports precinct are being built on a 7.2‑hectare site. The West Tamar Highway (A7) and Manions’ Coaches’ Legana Loop and regional routes provide road and bus links to Launceston and nearby towns.
