Overview

Mowbray sits on a flat‑topped, alluvial shelf known as Mowbray Hill, rising about 28 m above the Tamar River and its flood‑plains. The suburb grew from a modest grid of streets laid out on the southern slopes of the hill in the late 1800s, and after World War I expanded northward with a pattern of streets named for allied soldiers. This layered development has produced a mix of early‑era homes along Invermay Road and newer residences toward the racecourse, giving the area a varied housing stock that reflects its gradual suburbanisation.
