Murdunna, TAS 7178
Overview
Murdunna is a rural locality on the Forestier Peninsula, 36 km north‑east of Nubeena and roughly halfway along the Arthur Highway to Port Arthur. At just 6 m above sea level, it sits at the head of King George Sound on the Tasman Sea, with the western edge washed by Norfolk Bay. The 2016 census recorded 309 residents, but the population swells in summer as Hobart‐based visitors purchase holiday homes, creating a mix of permanent dwellings and seasonal retreats. Tourism drives the local economy, while forestry remains an important employer, and many commuters now travel daily to Hobart thanks to improved road links.
The community’s recreation centres on nearby Sommers Bay, about 5 km west, while the surrounding landscape is punctuated by low hills such as Murdunna Hill (0.7 km), Bun Hill (1.1 km) and Blackman Hill (2.1 km). Route A9 (Arthur Highway) runs through the town from north‑west to south, providing straightforward access for residents, visitors and daily commuters alike.
Region type mix: Regional 92%, Metro 8%.
