Overview

Orford is a seaside village on Tasmania’s east coast, about 73 km north‑east of Hobart, nestled at the mouth of the Prosser River on the southern edge of Prosful Bay. With 685 residents recorded in the 2021 census, the town’s relaxed lifestyle centres on its sandy beaches (Raspins, Millingtons, Spring and Rheban), world‑class fishing, a 9‑hole golf course, the Darlington Vineyard and a popular scuba‑diving reef. Residents and visitors enjoy three cafés, a supermarket, a hotel, a library, a primary school and essential services such as police and fire brigades, all within walking distance of the waterfront. Housing is dominated by detached homes, many owned outright or with a mortgage, and a notable stock of holiday‑home “shacks” that swell the population to over 3,000 in summer.
