Queenstown is a historic mining town of 1,808 residents (2021 census) nestled in a valley on the western slopes of Mount Owen. The town enjoys a very wet oceanic climate, with cool‑mild summers, snowy winters and more than 2,400 mm of annual rain, creating a lush backdrop for outdoor pursuits such as mountain‑bike trails, white‑water rafting and exploring the striking pink‑grey peaks of Mount Lyell and Mount Owen. Community life centres around the unique gravel‑topped football oval, the heritage‑listed Empire Hotel, the Paragon Theatre and a range of cafés and shops, including Broken Halo Coffee Kitchen and the local library.
