Risdon Vale sits on the eastern shore of the River Derwent, just north of historic Risdon Cove where British settlement began. The suburb was laid out in the early 1960s, with the post office opening in 1960 and a primary school founded the same year. Around 3,000 people live amid scrub‑covered hills that dry heavily in summer, prompting a local volunteer fire brigade.
