Nestled on the north‑eastern fringe of Norfolk Bay, Saltwater River is a quiet rural locality within the Tasman council area of south‑east Tasmania. Only 14 km north of Nubeena, it recorded 123 residents at the 2016 census, offering a close‑knit community surrounded by open country and coastal views. The landscape is dotted with the remnants of its penal past, including the Coal Mines Historic Site, which preserves the ruins of underground cells and an agricultural settlement once famed for vegetables, wheat and a piggery.
