At the 2021 census the area recorded a population of 195, reflecting its modest size after a historic peak of 2,109 during its gold‑mining era. The settlement was surveyed in 1860, named after the Crimean War’s Battle of Alma, and held a post office from 1861 until 1969.

Today the community enjoys a relaxed rural lifestyle, with easy road access to nearby Maryborough for shopping, schools and health services. The historic Alma Consols Mine lies within a kilometre, offering a reminder of the town’s mining heritage, while the surrounding landscape provides a mix of residential properties typical of small Victorian country towns.
