Overview

Barmah sits on the southern edge of the Murray River in north‑eastern Victoria, uniquely bordered by a small slice of New South Wales to the south. The town is framed by the world‑renowned Barmah red‑gum forest and the Barmah National Park floodplain, offering residents easy access to wetlands listed under the Ramsar Convention, abundant birdlife and prime fishing for Murray cod when the river swells through the “Barmah choke.” Its historic roots date back to 1856 when timber and later steamboat trade helped shape a close‑knit community that still enjoys the natural backdrop of the river and forest.
