Belmont sits on a hill above the Barwon River, just south of Geelong’s CBD and separated by the river’s common. At the 2011 census the suburb recorded 13,616 residents. The suburb is mainly residential, with separate houses from the interwar and post‑World II periods, some light industry on Barwon Heads Road, and ample parks such as Belmont Common, Winter and McDonald Reserves, a golf course and the Barwon Valley Fun Park.

High Street offers Geelong’s largest strip‑shopping precinct, upgraded in 2006 with underground power lines and trees. Bus routes link Belmont to the city, Highton, Waurn Ponds and Deakin University, while the James Harrison Bridge and Princes Highway provide quick car access. Schools include Belmont Primary, Roslyn and Oberon, plus Belmont High, and the suburb hosts churches, football and baseball clubs, and the Barwon Valley Activity Centre.
