Breakwater sits just 4 km south‑south‑east of Geelong’s central business district, bordered by the Barwon River on one side and an industrial precinct on the other. The 2016 census counted 1,014 residents, reflecting a housing mix that ranges from river‑front homes to dwellings near the workplace zones. A bridge opened in 2012 replaced the historic ford, providing a direct road link, and the former Geelong Racecourse railway station lies within easy walking distance.
