At the 2016 census the community numbered 1,081 residents, and the town’s historic centre includes the 1871‑opened post office and the 1874 Briagolong Hotel, which still serves meals and drinks. The local water supply is drawn from Freestone Creek, reflecting the area’s long‑standing link to timber production and natural resources.
Residents enjoy a strong sporting culture, sharing an Australian Rules football team with nearby Boisdale in the East Gippsland Football League and fielding the Saints cricket side, premiers in the 2018/19 Sale‑Maffra season. Outdoor recreation centers on the Freestone Creek, with swimming spots at Quarry Reserve (4.5 km north) and the Blue Pool (10 km north).
