Dartmoor, VIC 3304
Overview
Dartmoor is a rural township set on the Princes Highway beside the Glenelg River, midway between Heywood and the South Australian border in southwestern Victoria. The settlement, which grew from the former Woodford Inn in the late 1850s, is still linked by the highway while the Mount Gambier‑Heywood railway line that once served the town closed in April 1995. Timber processing from surrounding pine plantations remains the main local industry, giving the area a strong agricultural character.
The community enjoys active recreation, including a football team in the South West District Football League and the Dartmoor Golf Club on Wapling Avenue. According to the 2016 census, 322 people lived in the town, with a median age of 50 years and an average household size of 2.3, reflecting a blend of families and retirees. About three‑quarters of residents were born in Australia, and the town’s modest population size supports a close‑knit, family‑friendly lifestyle.
