Established in 1973 as a construction camp for the Dartmouth Dam, Dartmouth today is a tiny village perched where the Dart River meets the Mitta Mitta. With a permanent population of about 45 people, the settlement primarily serves fishermen, tourists and the workers who maintain the dam and its two power stations, while the historic post office, opened on 1 March 1973, remains a local hub.
