Overview

Derrinallum lies on the Hamilton Highway in the Corangamite Shire, at the foot of Mount Elephant, a 380‑m dormant volcanic cone. The town is the service centre for the surrounding farming community and offers easy access to Deep Lake and Lake Ettrick for fishing and recreation. Its population grew from 266 in 2001 to 557 in the 2016 Census, supporting a mix of post‑war homes and newer residences.

Local amenities include a FoodWorks supermarket with hardware, nursery and newsagency, a post office, pub, motel, Shell service station, two mechanics, a library, a Red Cross shop, a rural supplies store and a café. Education is provided by Derrinallum P12 College, while the main street hosts a war memorial, history rooms and the DISC community centre with Centrelink services. A seasonal farmer’s market runs each third Sunday from October to March, and sport is centred on the Lismore‑Derrinallum football team and an active CFA unit.
