Nestled in a valley at the foot of Mount Alexander, Harcourt lies just 8 km north‑east of Castlemaine where the Midland and Calder Highways cross. At the 2021 census the town recorded 1,038 residents, many of whom enjoy its historic apple‑growing legacy now complemented by emerging wine and cider production. Outdoor lovers can fish for trout, explore the extensive walking trails of Mount Alexander Park, including an old oak forest and the world’s largest apple, or ride the nearby La Larr Ba Gauwa Mountain Bike Park. The annual Harcourt Applefest each March Labour Day brings local produce, live music and sport to the town centre.

Despite the closure of Harcourt railway station in 1981, the community remains well‑served, with the nearest active train stop at Castlemaine and easy highway access. Local amenities include a post office, petrol station, general store, two cafés, a community pool, public hall, recreation reserve, primary school and a motel, while heritage sites such as the historic rail bridge sit just 0.7 km away.
