Harkaway is a semi‑rural suburb 39 km southeast of Melbourne’s CBD, nestled in the northeast corner of the City of Casey. At the 2021 census it recorded a population of 1,011, and its landscape is still defined by the early timber cottages and small‑scale farms established by German settlers in the 1850s. Bounded by Robinson, Halleur and Harkaway Roads, Boundary Road and Cardinia Creek, the area retains a quiet, country‑feel while remaining within easy reach of the Monash Freeway via the Heatherton Road exit, which becomes King Road on entering the suburb.

Local life centres on modest community facilities: Harkaway Primary School serves 116 students, a community hall, tennis courts and a network of walking and equestrian trails provide recreation. Most day‑to‑day services are accessed in nearby Berwick and Narre Warren, and while the suburb is not served by Melbourne’s public transport, a handful of sealed streets, Harkaway Road, Marks Court, St Fort Court and parts of King and Noack Roads, contrast with the predominantly unsealed roads that wind through the surrounding paddocks.
