Mount Helen, VIC 3350
Overview
Mount Helen is a suburb of Ballarat, just north of Buninyong on Canadian Creek. At the 2021 census the population was 3,011, and the gently undulating hills are fringed by bush and pine‑plantation forestry. The first house was built in 1952, and the area now mixes established residences with newer developments that use the scenic terrain.
The suburb hosts the headquarters of Federation University Australia and the Ballarat Technology Park, whose tenants, including IBM and state government offices, provide 1,400 jobs. Families benefit from nearby schools such as Emmaus Catholic Primary, Damascus College, Mount Clear College and Ballarat Steiner School, while Cliff Kennett Park and the Buninyong botanic gardens offer green recreation. Although the historic Buninyong railway station closed in 1930, Mount Helen relies on road travel; the Midland Highway carries over 15,000 vehicles daily and a bus runs every 30 minutes between Buninyong and northern Ballarat.
Region type mix: Metro 60%, Regional 40%.
