Numurkah, VIC 3636
Overview
Nestled on the Goulburn Valley Highway 37 kilometres north of Shepparton, Numurkah is the hub of the Shire of Moira with a 2021 Census population of 12,555. The town is served by a local post office, police station, fire station, town hall and two government schools, Numurkah Primary School and Numurkah Secondary College, while the nearby Numurkah Airport provides light‑aircraft access. Although the historic Goulburn Valley railway station (opened 1881) no longer carries passenger trains, the highway offers direct road links to regional centres.
Community life revolves around sport and outdoor events. Residents enjoy Australian rules football in the Murray Football League, a golf course on Tunnock Road, tennis, lawn bowls, boxing, a seasonal gymnasium and an outdoor swimming pool. Annual highlights include an art show in March, a fishing competition in April, go‑kart championships in September and a car show in December, all set against the backdrop of Broken Creek’s floodplain, native eucalypt woodlands and the distinctive Numurkah Grassland.
