Ouyen sits at the junction of the Calder and Mallee Highways, 105 km south of Mildura and 441 km northwest of Melbourne, and recorded a population of 1,170 in the 2021 Census. The town grew around the 1906 Ouyen railway station on the Mildura Line and remains the transport hub for the surrounding grain‑farming region, with road freight and a grain‑only rail line linking silos to ports in Portland and Adelaide. Its central location makes it the commercial and cultural centre for nearby farming communities.
