Port Fairy lies at the mouth of the Moyne River on the Southern Ocean, 28 km west of Warrnambool and 290 km from Melbourne, reachable via the Princes Highway. The former railway, closed in 1977, now serves as the Port Fairy to Warrnambool Rail Trail. With a 2016 census population of 3,340, the town offers a lively mix of tourism, a large fishing fleet and festivals such as the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Moyneyana and Tarerer.

The town provides two primary schools, a pharmaceutical plant on its outskirts, a highly‑rated 18‑hole links golf course and popular surf breaks like the Old Passage and East Beach.
