Rochester sits on the northern banks of the Campaspe River, about 180 km north of Melbourne and midway between Bendigo and the Murray‑River town of Echuca. At the 2021 census the town recorded 3,154 residents and offers a blend of rural and semi‑rural housing, ranging from farm blocks to suburban homes. A local railway station links the community to Bendigo and Melbourne, while the Northern Highway provides road access to surrounding centres.
