Tootgarook sits 62 km south of Melbourne’s central business district on the Mornington Peninsula, within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula and Boonwurrung Country. At the 2021 census the suburb recorded 3,178 residents. Its name, an Aboriginal word meaning “croaking of frogs”, reflects the natural character of the area, which is dominated by the 300‑hectare Tootgarook Wetland that supports rare and endangered flora and fauna.
