Venus Bay sits on a narrow peninsula 180 km south‑east of Melbourne on Victoria’s east coast. The 2021 census recorded 904 residents, but holiday periods swell the town into the thousands as a popular retreat for Melburnians and visitors to Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory. The township is divided into three estates; the First and Second contain the majority of the 2,800‑plus allotments created by subdivisions in 1959 and the 1980s, while the sparsely populated Third Estate offers under‑developed foreshore reserves.
The First Estate provides the town’s sole shopping strip – general store, pharmacy, surf‑shop/hairdresser, café, take‑away, real‑estate agents, caravan park and restaurant – plus a community centre, recycling op‑shop and the Surf Livesaving Club at No 1 Beach. Nearby surf beaches, a fishing jetty on Anderson’s Inlet and a viewing platform with kangaroo sightings add to outdoor recreation, while a seasonal beach shuttle bus links the estates and road access connects directly to Melbourne.
