Overview

Broome (Rubibi) is a coastal pearling and tourist town set on a north‑south peninsula where the Indian Ocean meets Roebuck Bay. Residents enjoy easy access to Town Beach – home of the “Staircase to the Moon” tide‑and‑moon spectacle and a regular craft market – and the 22‑km white‑sand stretch of Cable Beach backed by the Minyirr coastal reserve. The area’s international‑important mudflats support millions of migratory shorebirds, with the Broome Bird Observatory nearby, while the town’s open‑air Sun Picture Garden offers the world’s oldest operating cinema. Six schools, a community health service and Broome Hospital serve a diverse population of 14,660 (2021 census), including a strong Yawuru presence.
