Walkaway, WA 6528
Overview
Walkaway is a small town in the City of Greater Geraldton, Western Australia, with a population of 270 recorded in the 2016 census. Its name derives from “Wagga wah,” describing the bend in the nearby Greenough River, and the settlement grew after the railway station was established when a line from Geraldton opened in 1887. By 1894 the town was linked to the Eastern Railway at Midland Junction via a private land‑grant railway built by the Midland Railway Company, providing residents with historic rail connections that shaped early transport options.
Today, Walkaway’s lifestyle is closely tied to the surrounding renewable‑energy hub. The Walkaway Wind Farm (54 turbines, completed 2005) and the Mumbida Wind Farm (55 MW, completed 2013) sit a few kilometres east, while the Greenough River Solar Farm, commissioned in 2012, adds further solar capacity. Community amenities include a former cinema now serving as a Community Hall 3.5 km away and the heritage‑listed Holy Trinity Anglican Church located 4 km from the town centre, offering cultural and social venues for locals.
Region type mix: Metro 100%.
