Oberon has an oceanic climate with mild to warm summers and cool to cold winters, temperatures averaging 0° to 9 °C. Frosts are common in autumn, winter and spring, and the town can receive moderate to occasional heavy snowfalls each year.

The town’s economy is driven by farming, forestry and wood products. These sectors have traditionally been the primary sources of employment in the area.

Heritage listings include the Malachi Gilmore Memorial Hall on Oberon Street, the Oberon railway station on the Tarana‑Oberon line, and walking tracks within the Blue Mountains National Park. The Caves Road heritage site leads to the nearby Jenolan Caves.

Residents can enjoy fishing at Lake Oberon and The Reef Reserve, walk the tracks around the Blenheim State Forest, and play golf at the local golf club on Hume Street. The area also offers picnic facilities at the Oberon Dam and botanical displays at Mayfield Garden.

Oberon is about 49 km southeast of Bathurst via the sealed O'Connell Road, roughly 50 km southwest of the Great Western Highway near Hartley using Jenolan Caves and Duckmaloi Roads, and around 140 km north of Goulburn via the Goulburn‑Oberon Road.

A weekday morning bus connects Oberon to Tarana station, where passengers can link to the Bathurst Bullet train to Sydney, and Newmans operates weekday buses to Bathurst linking to additional NSW TrainLink services. Lithgow Buslines also provides a school‑day service to Lithgow.

The commercial heart includes Carrington Avenue and Ross Street, with parks such as the Oberon Showground, Cunynghame Oval and Apex Park, a museum on North Street, a caravan park, a hospital, and a wood gallery on Oberon Street. Rotary Lookout on Abercrombie Road offers scenic views of the surrounding area.
