Overview
Alyangula, the largest township on Groote Eylandt, offers a self‑contained lifestyle built around the Groote Eylandt Mining Company community. Residents enjoy a first‑class resort, four clubs, an arts centre, a coffee shop, a golf course and other sporting facilities, plus a 25 m swimming pool, church, half a dozen shops, a bank, post office and travel agency. Education and health services are local, with Alyangula Area School (up to Year 11), a childcare centre, a training centre, an area health centre, as well as a courthouse and police station.
The town was created in the late 1960s to house GEMCO workers, so housing is primarily purpose‑built for the mining workforce, with the majority of the 2016‑recorded 873 residents employed by the mine. Fuel is subsidised by the operation, making it the cheapest in Australia, and the township serves as the main hub for transport and services on the island.
