Leanyer lies on the traditional Country and waterways of the Larrakia people and forms a northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory. The name, recorded on 1869 survey plans, is believed to stem from an Aboriginal word, and the suburb’s streets honour coastal features and northern rivers, providing a clear, locally‑themed road network. Residential development began in the 1970s after the area’s brief World War II role as an army post and equipment storage site, creating a mature housing mix that blends long‑standing homes with newer dwellings.
