Overview
Malak is a northern suburb of Darwin in the Northern Territory, named after an Aboriginal tribe from the Daly River area. The suburb’s layout was largely shaped in the 1970s and 1980s, with construction still underway when Cyclone Tracy struck Darwin in 1974. Historically the area had a high proportion of social‑housing dwellings, but the share fell to 11.2 % in the 2011 census from 28.8 % in 1991, indicating a shifting housing mix.
Today Malak offers a family‑friendly lifestyle with extensive parklands such as Malak Park and nearby Rosella Park. The suburb hosts three schools – Darwin Adventist School, Malak Primary School and Sanderson Middle School – and is close to the Top End School of Flexible Learning. It also contains the Northern Territory divisional headquarters of the Australian Red Cross and community facilities like C‑AID Consultants, while its position just north of Darwin gives easy access to the city’s wider services.
