Nhulunbuy sits on the Gove Peninsula in the far‑north of the Northern Territory, home to 3,350 residents according to the 2021 Census. The town grew around a bauxite mine and alumina refinery and today offers a relaxed, coastal lifestyle close to the Indigenous community of Yirrkala, renowned for its Aboriginal art. Residents enjoy outdoor recreation at the northernmost Gove Country Golf Club, the Gove Boat Club and several nearby parks such as Jasmine and Lions Park. A tropical savannah climate brings hot, humid summers and a pronounced wet season from December to May.

Local amenities centre on Endeavour Square, which houses the northernmost Woolworths supermarket, a BWS liquor outlet and a Westpac bank, alongside Walkabout Lodge & Tavern and the Gove District Hospital. Education is served by Nhulunbuy Primary School, Nhulunbuy High School (with a $20 million boarding facility) and Nhulunbuy Christian College. Because over 700 km of unsealed roads require a permit, most supplies and visitors arrive via Gove Airport or by sea, and the town’s housing stock reflects its mining heritage while adapting to a more diverse community after the 2014 refinery closure.
