Overview

Smithlea is a quiet rural locality in the Goondiwindi Region of Queensland, perched on the Queensland–New South Wales border. The Dumaresq River outlines its southern and western edges, supporting a landscape of native‑vegetation grazing and modest river‑side crop production. With only 41 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, the community relies on nearby Texas for primary and secondary schooling (Prep to Year 10) and uses distance education or boarding for senior years.

The Texas–Yelarbon Road runs through the south and west of Smithlea, linking the area to Texas and Beebo and providing the main transport link today. Although a branch railway once connected the locality, opened in 1930 and closed in 1994, its corridor now remains unused. Housing consists mainly of low‑density rural properties associated with the grazing land, offering a spacious, country lifestyle.
