Overview

South Stradbroke is a tiny island locality at the northern edge of the Gold Coast, lying only metres from the Southport Spit and home to 142 residents according to the 2021 Census. The 21 km by 2.5 km landform is dominated by sand dunes, remnants of livistona rainforest and melaleuca wetlands, and it supports a distinctive wildlife mix including the endemic golden wallaby and hundreds of friendly wallabies that often mingle with campers.

The island’s lifestyle centres on outdoor recreation and low‑density accommodation. Council‑run campgrounds at Tipplers and the Currigee sites offer tent spaces, gas BBQs, children’s play areas and basic kiosks, while the former Couran Cove Island Resort on the north side provides a range of holiday houses, dining and wildlife‑watching experiences. Access is by boat, about a forty‑minute ride from Surfers Paradise, and residents rely on mainland schools and services, with recent disputes temporarily cutting water, electricity and gas for some households. Housing is a blend of private homes at the southern tip and seasonal campsites throughout the island.
