Overview
St George is the administrative heart of the Shire of Balonne in south‑west Queensland, lying 513 km west of Brisbane on the Balonne River. At the 2021 census the locality recorded 3,130 residents. The town’s riverside setting provides excellent yellowbelly and Murray cod fishing, and the annual St George show during the Labour Day long weekend adds a lively community focus. With hot semi‑arid summers and mild winters, outdoor pursuits are popular year‑round.
Conveniently located at the junction of the Castlereagh, Moonie, Carnarvon and Balonne highways, St George is accessed via the Andrew Nixon Bridge, the only crossing of the Balonne River, and is served by its own airport. Residents enjoy a visitor information centre, cultural centre, swimming pool, showground, bowling greens, the St George Golf Club, a council‑run library and an active Country Women’s Association room. The town’s amenities support families, retirees and those linked to the surrounding cotton, sheep and grain industries.
