Overview
Stuart is a rural coastal suburb on the north‑east edge of Townsville, bordered by the Coral Sea. With a 2021 census population of 1,576, the area is largely undeveloped, with most land devoted to infrastructure and industry and only a modest pocket of residential housing. The suburb retains a historic feel through heritage sites such as St Brigid’s Church and the former Stewart’s Creek Gaol.
Transport links are strong: the North Coast railway line runs along the western edge with Stuart railway station, while the Bruce and Flinders Highways, Townsville Connection Road and Townsville Port Road provide road access across the region. Local amenities include the Townsville Correctional Centre, a landfill and waste‑transfer station, the Mount Stuart Power Station and the Sun Metals zinc refinery. Although Stuart has no schools, primary options are in South Townsville, Idalia and Wulguru, and secondary students attend William Ross State High School in Annandale.
