Overview

Tara is a rural town and locality on the Darling Downs in the Western Downs Region of Queensland. At the 2021 census the community counted 1,980 residents. The town centre is surrounded by a ribbon of lifestyle blocks ranging from 13 to 40 ha, creating a blend of traditional town housing and semi‑rural properties that outnumber the town itself.

Rail connectivity is provided by Tara railway station on the Glenmorgan line, with the historic Tullagrie station nearby. Residents enjoy a small‑scale library on Day Street, a primary‑secondary campus at Tara Shire State College and St Joseph’s Catholic primary school. The Commercial Hotel adds local character with two Hugh Sawrey murals, and Southwood National Park lies a short drive away for outdoor recreation.
