The Gap has a good public bus service that connects the suburb to the wider Brisbane area. Waterworks Road, the main arterial road, provides easy access for buses and private vehicles.
Nearby attractions include Enoggera Reservoir and Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre for fishing, canoeing, kayaking and stand‑up paddling, as well as Ashgrove Golf Club. The suburb also boasts over 45 parks with sports fields, playgrounds, BBQs and off‑leash dog areas.
The Gap Village shopping centre serves local retail needs, and a police station is located on Waterworks Road. A Queensland Fire & Rescue station and a Queensland Ambulance Service station are also within close proximity.
The Gap is named for its position in the valley between Mount Coot‑tha and Enoggera Hill, forming ‘the gap’ between the hills. The area was originally heavily forested, later cleared for timber and farming after European settlement in the 1850s.
The suburb was impacted by a major storm on 16 November 2008, when a microburst caused extensive tree damage and roof loss across many homes in The Gap.
Television station TVQ and several radio stations, including Triple M Brisbane 104.5, Nova 106.9 and 4EB, are located roughly 2–3 kilometres from 10 Lochinvar Lane.
