The suburb is bounded by the Logan Motorway and can be reached via the Pacific Motorway (M1).

The suburb is named after early property owner William Underwood, who operated the Commercial Hotel in the 1870s‑1890s. Underwood was gazetted on 11 August 1975 and became part of Logan City in 1978.
