Dee River Road runs beside the Dee River, which forms the eastern boundary of Wowan, and meets the Leichhardt Highway at its corner, giving the street its main north‑south transport link through the locality. Although the Dawson Valley railway line once served the area, it was closed in 1987, leaving the highway as the primary route for residents and visitors.

The road is lined with modest rural homes that reflect the town’s farming character, producing beef, hay, grain, pork and eggs, and the Wowan and District Museum, housed in the former butter factory and railway station, sits directly on Dee River Road as a local cultural amenity. The community’s annual agricultural show each August adds a seasonal focal point to the neighbourhood.
