Before European settlement in the 1860s, the land was occupied by the Wangerriburra Clan of the Yugambeh language group, and the name Yarrabilba means "place of song". The area featured two bora rings for ceremonial singing, and later hosted the Beaudesert railway line (1915‑1955) and a World War II military training base, Camp Cable.
In 2010, Yarrabilba was identified as a future city site expected to contain 20,000 dwellings housing up to 50,000 people, alongside new urban centres at Greater Flagstone and Ecco Ripley. Development of the first 93.2‑hectare stage began in 2011, contributing to rapid growth.
Yarrabilba was originally part of the Shire of Beaudesert but became part of Logan City after the 2008 local government amalgamations. In 2025, the neighbouring locality of Kairabah was incorporated into Yarrabilba, creating a single locality name for the whole priority development area.
