Before European settlement the land was occupied by the Wangerriburra Clan of the Yugambeh language group, and the name Yarrabilba means “place of song”. Later, the Beaudesert railway line (1915‑1955) ran through the area and during World War II the Camp Cable military base was established nearby.
The 2016 census recorded a population of 3,580 people, while the 2021 census showed the number had risen dramatically to 10,240 residents, indicating rapid growth.
In 2010 it was announced that Yarrabilba would become a future city expected to contain about 20,000 dwellings housing up to 50,000 people, forming part of a larger regional development strategy.
