Canowie Belt is a rural locality in South Australia’s Mid North, officially named in August 2000 when its long‑used local name was formalised. The title derives from the Aboriginal word kanya‑owie meaning “rock waterhole,” reflecting the area’s early connection to the Canowie Station pastoral lease and its open‑country landscape.

Although modern services are limited, the community retains a legacy of early amenities: a school that operated as Yongala Blocks from 1904 until 1967, a post office (1902‑1946), a Baptist church opened in 1904 (now closed), and the Canowie Belt Hall launched in July 1909, which historically served as the focal point for social gatherings. The locality’s housing mix is therefore dominated by farm‑style properties and modest rural homes, offering a quiet lifestyle rooted in its pastoral heritage.
