Overview

Nestled in the southern Flinders Ranges, Hammond sits on the banks of Bellaratta Creek, just 0.2 km from the tranquil South Whim Dam. Surveyed in May 1879 and named after William Henry Hammond Jervois, the locality retains a quiet countryside charm, with its historic landscape framed by the nearby creek and the legacy of a former railway hub.

The town once thrived on the Peterborough–Quorn railway line, providing direct rail links to Adelaide, Port Pirie, Broken Hill and, after 1917, to Perth via the Trans‑Australian Railway. Although passenger services ceased in 1937 and freight dwindled by the 1980s, the railway’s imprint remains a point of local interest. Community facilities such as St Dominic’s Catholic Church (1907‑2006) and the Hammond school (1886‑closed) have also closed, leaving a modest residential fabric that reflects the settlement’s historic roots.
